Biaco now has its own full time patent lawyer Tom Fraser who heads up Intellectual Property (IP).
This appointment was necessary due to the explosion in IP work required as the technology matures from development to exploitation stage. This has led to a significant increase in filings of patents. The status of the patent portfolio, updated monthly, is shown below:

As shown in the graph, Biaco takes the protection of its intellectual property (IP) very seriously. The patent portfolio is already comprehensive and this portfolio is ever-expanding. The development of this patent portfolio and all Biaco trademarking has been aided by IP Attorney firm Mathys & Squire.
All scientific breakthroughs, engineering know-how, or implementation specific developments to the technology are monitored, and where relevant, patent applications will be filed for such inventions.
For each patent family, the initial focus is on patent protection in the UK. There will be a lag of two years or more between the earliest filing date in the UK and the first UK patent granting in that family. Nevertheless, positive feedback may be received from the UK Office in advance of them granting a UK patent. Biaco is aiming to significantly increase the number of its granted UK patents over the next 12 months.
A much greater time lag exists between the initial earliest filing date and the time at which granted patents are obtained abroad. Biaco has a global patent filing strategy, and, in particular, Biaco will look to obtain patent protection worldwide for its most commercially relevant inventions. For obtaining patent protection abroad, this lag is used advantageously to provide more time to fine tune the patenting strategy, especially to ensure that resulting patents around the world are best-aligned with the latest technological developments. This time lag also helps to defer larger patenting costs.
The first patent family filed by Biaco relates to core aspects of the technology. From this family, there are already a number of granted patents worldwide, with this number set to significantly increase over the next 12 to 24 months. There are then a further three patent families which relate to adaptations, modifications and improvements of the core technology disclosed in the first family. These three families have seen grants in the UK and these will be pursued worldwide in due course. After this, there is a growing number of patent families which have been filed but not yet published. The number of Biaco patent families will continue to grow in line with the development of the Biaco technology.
